The herbal active substance with the familiar name resveratrol is contained in larger quantities in the shells of grapes and in red wine. It was discovered 70 years ago, but then fell into oblivion until the 1990s.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School have found in animal experiments that the organism mobilizes survival genes in starvation situations, which slow down cell aging with their high cytoprotective effect. Further research has shown that these survival genes are mainly activated by resveratrol, and not only during starvation.
The health effects of resveratrol
Because resveratrol is both water and fat soluble, it probably provides significantly more antioxidant protection than other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, which are either water or fat soluble. Of particular importance is the ability to specifically prevent the deleterious change (oxidation) of LDL cholesterol that would cause this cholesterol to become lodged in the vessel walls. In this way, an essential factor for the development of arteriosclerosis and other serious cardiovascular diseases can be minimized. At the same time Resveratrol counteracts a clumping of the platelets and thus significantly improves the fluidity of the blood. By activating enzymes called sirtuins, the natural active ingredient can additionally increase the energy utilization.
In the meantime, a certain preventive effect against cancer, as it is known from other polyphenols, such as those isolated from green tea, seems to be certain. However, according to current knowledge, the most striking effect of the natural substance is the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the strengthening of the immune system due to its high antioxidant capacity.
